Cheap Valentine's Day Activities

By Zoe Marzi on February 10, 2021

Valentine’s Day may seem overhyped or like a luxury you can’t quite afford to celebrate after a year of unexpected financial upheaval. However, it can be extremely rewarding, both for you and your partner, to take a day to remind your partner how much you appreciate them. That appreciation doesn’t have to take form in expensive gifts or typical fancy dinners, as here you will find some examples of cheap Valentine’s Day activities that will help you to celebrate the holiday by being frugal with money without skimping on the love.

MOVIE DATE

Valentine’s Day can be a perfect excuse to sit down and watch a rom-com with popcorn, chocolate, and a little wine(if you are legal). It’s a low-stress activity and if you take the time to set the room up to look a little bit nicer than normal (lay out a blanket or a few candles) your partner will be happy to see the mix of relaxation and a little extra effort. With the rise of so many different streaming systems, it can also be a great way to connect to a long-distance partner. Showing that you can dedicate a committed amount of time to your loved one is always a lovely reminder of how much you care about them. As far as picking a movie goes, which can always be difficult, here is a recommendation to get the ball rolling: Netflix’s Always Be My Maybe. It is funny, sweet, and features a very meta Keanu Reeves!

COOKING DINNER

Making dinner at home together can be a perfect replacement for eating out on Valentine’s Day!  Cooking together will be more memorable than simply eating at a restaurant, and the meal can be as simple or complex as you would like it to be. If you are physically apart from each other, it is still feasible for you both to cook dinner at the same time while on FaceTime! You might attempt to replicate a favorite restaurant’s dish, try something you’ve never had before, or share a family recipe.  To bring the experience to the next level, plan to make an additional appetizer or dessert, like the Valentine’s classic of chocolate-covered strawberries.

DRESSING UP FOR FAST FOOD

It can be nice taking the time to get dressed up and showing off a different look for your partner. Valentine’s Day can provide a perfect excuse to do so while also allowing you to flip the stakes by not partaking in a typically elegant excursion. You might dress up in order to have takeout at home or even to pick up fast food! This juxtaposition relieves the pressure of fitting in with stereotypical expectations while also giving you the chance to remind your partner how fabulous they look!

MAKE A GIFT FOR EACH OTHER TOGETHER

Heartfelt and homemade gifts are oftentimes the less expensive more meaningful gifts a person can give or receive. They can also be a little bit time consuming and, depending upon the concept, might put a little strain on your budget. Why not alleviate the stress of all members of the relationship by agreeing to make a gift for the relationship together? This way you divide all potential costs while enjoying not only the finished product but also the memories you form while crafting together! Some example crafts include painting mugs, collaging a picture frame with images of your relationship, or writing old fashioned valentine’s day cards (bad rhyming encouraged).

VIRTUAL DATE

Going on a virtual date is applicable both to people living in close proximity to their partner and those engaging in a long-distance relationship. It is likely that if there is a particular date activity that you miss partaking in that you can find a virtual replacement for it. After you have found an online activity for you to do together you can enjoy each other’s company in a novel experience befitting the electronic environment we find ourselves in. The virtual nature of this date allows you to try activities that you’ve never tried before or to experience a new version of a beloved tradition. This could mean exploring a virtual haunted house, a virtual escape room, or if you are looking for something more competitive, an online game tournament!

No matter what you do, remember that it’s free to tell everyone you care about how much you love and appreciate them!
